Arrest in hit-and-run

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Detectives have charged a Wallington man with speeding off after his car hit someone who was getting into his own vehicle.

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli told CLIFFVIEW PILOT that Richard Stawarz, 29, was drunk when he dumped the car in Paterson moments after the Saturday night crash in front 57 Hayward Place in Wallington.

The initial call to police at 6:50 p.m. Feb, 20, 2009 was of a mugging. Officers found Bartlomie Gasienica of 74 Hayward Place sprawled at the

curb, Molinelli said.

He apparently “was struck by a vehicle while he was getting into the driver's side door of his car,” the prosecutor told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Soon after, Paterson police their Wallington counterparts “to check on a 1993 Toyota Corolla which had been abandoned in Paterson with damage to its side and front end,” he said.

Stawarz is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury, assault by auto, driving under the influence and reckless driving. He’s scheduled for a first appearance March 8 in Wallington Municipal Court.
