Free CSI-styled classes begin for adult citizens' police academy

Enrollment is open for a nine-week course that teaches adults and high school seniors the type of work done by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office -- including one of the most critical services, that of the Bureau of Criminal Identification, which processes crime scenes for clues.

“We are excited to once again offer our popular Citizen’s Police Academy for adults and high school seniors,” Bergen County Sheriff Leo P. McGuire said.  “The academy gives participants a better understanding of and appreciation for the important public safety role that law enforcement plays in the community.”

The Academy is offered in a classroom-style format with periodic demonstrations of equipment and tactics used by real officers, said Jennifer Monaghan, a spokewoman for the department.

"Participants will learn about the tools and strategies officers use in a broad range of areas including homeland security preparedness, the Medical Examiner’s Office, gang violence awareness, homicide investigations, K-9 patrol and detection, criminal investigations and ballistics," she said.

Classes for high schoolers begin Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.  The general adult police academy class starts up on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.  Both groups will meet once a week, Monaghan said.
