Drunk driving and auto assault charges in Route 46 head-on crash

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A man behind the wheel of a Cadillac CTS that veered across a Route 46 grass median and crashed head-on into an oncoming Subaru Forester -- leaving the other motorist with a broken pelvis and internal injuries -- is charged with drunk driving, assault by auto and pot possession, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.

Xavier Fernandez, 31, of Passaic was headed west near Green Street in Teterboro just after midnight this morning when his vehicle veered across the median and struck the SUV driven by 43-year-old Matthew Keefe of Park Ridge.

Keefe is at Hackensack University Medical Center in stable but critical condition, Molinelli said.

After an investigation by the prosecutor’s Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, Fernandez was charged and taken to the Bergen County Jail, where he remains held on $50,000 bail.
