Bernie Kerik out of psych unit after 10-day stay

A jail doctor told a judge that former NYPD Commissioner Bernard Kerik doesn't need psychiatric care, although he will remain behind bars after being discharged from the mental health unit of the Westchester County Jail while he awaits his trial next week on corruption charges.

In a letter to the judge presiding over the case in White Plains, Dr. Robert Mahler said Kerik, who spent 10 days in the unit, "poses no risk to himself or others due to any psychiatric illness."

Kerik, 54, of Franklin Lakes, will be tried on charges of accepting renovations to his Bronx apartment in exchange for helping a Clifton contractor with suspected mob ties get city work. (See: Kerik, seething at prosecutors, awaits trial in jail)

Mahler originally told Judge Stephen Robinson last week that Kerik was displaying undisclosed "at risk" behavior brought on by more than the ordinary stress of his incarceration -- odd for someone who was trained, and trained others, in dealing with such circumstances.

However, Mahler -- in a letter made public by the judge -- said Kerik was admitted to the psych unit merely for "observational purposes and psychiatric assessment in the context of psychosocial stressors."
