JOURNEYS: The music of life

After being graciously asked to submit another article, I began to think about writing and of words.  For me, words are like music notes that, when combined correctly, form a song.  Like the composer of an orchestra, the writer has the responsibility of incorporating crescendos and diminuendos, melody and emotion into his or her piece.

I believe it is duty of the writer to take their thoughts and turn them into a package of verbal melodies that has the capability of evoking in the reader the sensations they are trying to convey.

There are a lot of things that go into this almost clairvoyant transmission of thoughts and emotions.  When I look to write, I view myself as a tailor: I make custom suits to fit.  I craft each piece specifically for the intended.  This ‘know your audience’ method allows me to create an experience that I can be assured is not only relatable, but visceral.  And that is what I strive to achieve.

All noteworthy writers throughout history were able to summon an empathetic response from the reader.  Ernest Hemingway stated: “My aim is to put down on paper what I see and that I feel in the best and simplest way.”   And he is absolutely right.  There is no high greater than to know you have created a song that is not only understood, but universal.

Artists are thinkers and feelers.  What makes any artist successful is their ability to take the cacophony of thoughts and feelings in their mind and sculpt them into the media of their choosing, be it music, art, photography, writing or otherwise. To create a tangible product of the mind.

The beauty of it is that everyone carries their own melody, their own tune.  It is as clearly read on them like the notes on a staff.  The key is to read those notes and create a glorious tune.  Once you do that, not only would you have written words, but a song as well.
