Edgewater: From rats to riches

Take that, Hoboken: Million-dollar townhouses, fancy restaurants, and, now, Edgewater finds itself #4 on Money Magazine's list of "Best Places for the Rich and Single." Bet you never thought you had it so good, Edgewater. Most people these days think of you as best place to get stuck in traffic while listening to those noisy parrots.

Of the nearly 10,000 residents, the magazine reports, more than a third are single. Median age: 38. Median income: $105,830.You want to talk famous names from Edgewater? Why, there's.... And, um... OK, let's talk about something else.

"Flirt with your neighbors in the organic produce aisle of the local Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. Or tone your muscles and expand your social circle at one of the borough's fitness centers," urges the report, which puts Hermosa Beach (47% single) at the top. "Hold hands as you gaze at the breathtaking Manhattan skyline. Or take a five-minute ferry ride across the Hudson River for all the nightlife New York City has to offer."

It was half a generation ago that one-laned River Road twisted and turned like a snake past Xandar's and the Barge Inn, before the vaunted double-lane stretch replaced Old River Road.

The folks who lived atop the Palisades -- from Fort Lee to Guttenberg -- looked down their noses, calling the residents "river rats."  Leave 'er, brother (Inside joke).

Few outsiders could resist a ride through the "midget village," where the homes were so tiny, we figured, only little people could live there (Oops, did I say "we"?).

You had to figure something was up when producers of the movie "Copland" came calling. Robert DiNiro, Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel -- all right there on your very streets?

For the record: Arlington, Va., placed second, followed by Coronado, CA. But take comfort, Edgewater: You topped Santa Clara, CA, with all its Silicon Valley Poindexters, as well as Edward, CO, Vail's stepsister.

And in case you were wondering, Warren was the only other New Jersey town to make the top 10 places for the rich and single. Madison (#11) came close, with Rutherford (#22) barely in view.

That's because here in Edgewater, the median home price is $535,000; school test scores are 10% percent above average and math scores 11.7%; there is one personal crime for every 1,000 residents -- although property crimes are much higher: 23 for every 1,000.

How about: With Manhattan and Washington Heights so close, and businesses wedged in along the Jersey "Gold Coast"line, there are nearly 27,000 eating establishments within 15 miles!

Apparently, Edgewater is a great place to live -- if you're rich, single and like to eat out a lot.
